Dogs!

I've been harboring thoughts of getting a dog this Summer and I need your help in deciding the best breed for our family. But first let me give you some history.

Until we gained custody of Todd's kids (as a side note - Darren, Elora, and Larissa are not my Biological kids - but my kids, nonetheless), I had never really had a pet. My brother Brian had a crazy cat named Tard that I lived with for about 3 years - but she was downright mean. (Sorry Brian, I know that hurts to hear...be strong). I didn't grow up with pets and was, to be honest, scared of them. When it was determined that Larissa, who is a huge cat lover (not to say that Larissa is huge, because clearly she is not - but to say that she has a very large affection for cats), would be coming to our home - Todd and I realized that we would need a cat or two. Enter Stitch, aka Creature, and Baby Bear. In case you haven't noticed - I ADORE these cats. Who knew that animals could be so much fun to have around? Since then I have gained a huge love for all animals - not just my cats. They make me giggle and I think they're just funny little critters. Llamas and emus particularly tickle my funny bone.

So, I'm branching out and thinking I might like a dog. I realize they're a huge committment and want to make sure I know what I'm getting myself into. I would like a dog that I can take on walks and jogs - medium to large-sized. Preferably a dog that doesn't bark too much. Needs to be good with my cats. Would like a gentle, cuddly dog - not mean - but one that also likes to play and have fun. Here are my thoughts so far....

Old English Sheepdog - How cute is he??!!
I love his fuzziness.

Newfoundland - I hear they are great dogs. But huge! Would a Newfie be too much dog for a beginner like me?

Lab - Just an all-around good dog, I hear.

Collie - For cute!

So, what are your thoughts? Advice, hints, tips, other dog breeds worth considering? Do you have an awesome dog?

Some people tell me they haven't been able to leave a comment. Choose "Anonymous" if you don't have a google id.

Thanks much!

Tard wasn't mean, she just didn't like you. As a "bigger kitty" she was careful who she associated with. You were, in here words, "lame".

I think you should get a Lab. I don't remember what kind of a dog Rugger was but that's the kind of dog I want. Big, dumb, happy. I hated that Tard was smarter than I was. I won't make that mistake again.

Finally, I think it's very important that you monitor your pet inventory. I don't want to hear about some home fire in suncrest killing 21 cats.

LOL!
Tard hated me because I wouldn't watch her eat. Besides, I could always beat her downstairs and she didn't like that.

I shuddered when I heard the story of the 21 cats. I must outline some sort of emergency cat evacuation plan so that doesn't happen.

A collie or a newfie! But that's just my humble opinion.

Get a Sheep Dog! They're so fluffy! It's a heavenly sensation having your hands dive into layers and layers of pure, white, fluffy clouds!

Plus, there is one in our neighborhood that is really nice, so that may be some insight on how tempered they are /=.

Ouch. The family is divided. Of course!!

Whatever you do, make it a big dog so Brian can't put it in the freezer like he did Tard. No wonder that cat was mean.

I think either a Lab or a Golden Retriever would best suite your pet needs. The best part is there are often lots of homeless purebred dogs of either of these breeds at both animal services and the Humane Society. Then you could rescue a dog and you usually get out of the chore of housebreaking a puppy. Both of my dogs came from the HS and were housebroken and more or less trained. Dakota is still a little Dee-Duh-Dee but that's just his personality. So there are my two cents.

Go for the labradoodle or the goldendoodle. Great around kids...and they dont shed! If I could have any dog..it would be one of these two..

sorry this is a late comment, just catching up.

A labradoodle and goldendoodle? How adorable! I just googled them. Too cute. Hmmm, requires some thought. :)
